Online services for children aged 12 – 16 years
Young people with capacity have the legal right to access their own health records and can allow or prevent access by others, including their parents. Anyone aged 12 or over is presumed to have such capacity, although a child might of course achieve capacity earlier or later. In any event, children who wish to should be able to access their own health records.
Parents of children aged between 12 to 16 years may access their child’s medical records if the child or young person consents, or lacks capacity, and it does not go against the child’s best interests. For this reason, online access is automatically cancelled on a child’s 12th birthday, at which point the child may to choose to request their own online login details, or if they wish a parent or guardian to hold these details they will need to discuss this with a GP to ensure they understand the consequences of allowing access to their record (this discussion is usually in the form of a telephone call which can be booked through Reception).
